The world’s first Japanese style Starbucks

In the heart of Kyoto, on the beautiful streets of Gion, surrounded by

traditional wooden houses, a new Starbucks opened today (6/30/2017).

They renovated a more than 100 years old machiya house (traditional

Kyoto-style wooden house) and turned it into the world’s first Japanese style

Starbucks with inner gardens and tatami rooms.

The design is really humble, the whole building blending in to the historical area.

After entering, you pass by a stonegarden and arrive to the area,

where you can make your order.

The lights are dim, the atmosphere is really friendly and you can feel the history

around you, but in the same time it is modern and comfortable.

In an average Starbucks, after the order, you just step aside and wait for your coffee.

But here you have to walk through a beautiful corridor and arrive to an another

area, where the baristas are preparing your order.

While you are waiting, you can enjoy the view of the inner garden.

We tried the new Japanese speciality, Matcha Frappuccino, made with green tea.

It was really delicious!

There are small rooms on the first floor, where you can sit, but the really

unique ones are on the second floor.

To use a tatami room, you have to take your shoes off.

After that you can sit on the tatami floor or on the cushions and enjoy the atmosphere.

The floor of the tatami rooms is authentic one, you can feel its very nice and

fresh aroma in the air.

There are many nice details in this Starbucks, like the wallscrolls, the flowers and

gardens (3 gardens!), the beautiful windows with traditional style blinders.

There are more rooms on the second floor, each one is different, and they

have seats for 51 people in total.

We really enjoyed the place, because of the unique mixture of old and modern.

The lights are not too bright, the rooms are not too spacious, therefore it is a little bit

mystical and creates an intimate atmosphere.

This old house was carefully renovated, they payed attention to even the

smallest details, so in this Starbucks you can travel back in time and

enjoy Japan in a unique way!

This Japanese style Starbucks is instantly became one of our favourite places.
